At one extreme, Joy Gregory chooses the arduous 19th century salt printing and kallitype techniques to capture everyday 21st century items in her Objects of Beauty and Handbags series. She describes her aim as ‘I wanted to make beautiful objects slightly abstract as well as aged’. The Cinderella series employs the now extinct 35mm colour film to document the journey of a pair of golden shoes through cities chosen for their links to the African diaspora. They symbolise the photographer’s own background, but these subtle meanings are veiled by the tourist post-card glow of shoes and the settings.
