Melinda Gibson’s carefully constructed collages stand apart from other print re-creations. Her characters present the bigger picture, revealing contexts bizarre, domestic and mundane. In contrast to Julie Cockburn she creates her characters through collaged snatches of colour, patterned or photographed imagery. Surrealism infuses many works; others posses a sculptural, three-dimensional effect shared by Julie Cockburn’s embroidered pieces.
Surrealism hooks Gibson into the lineage of the master collagists, most notably John Stezaker and the early 20th century legends, Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch whose sometimes political, often symbolic cinematic tableaux chime with her narrative visions.
