ARUSHA GALLERY, EDINBURGH

Stand P10

Arusha Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of largescale, intensely worked linocuts by John Abell titled ‘Horrorvacui’, referencing the Latin phrase horror vacui that translates as “fear of emptiness”.

Abell is particularly known for his large prints and highly coloured watercolour paintings that explore life, love, lust and the human condition. His artworks are charged with a sense of fear and pessimism, along with a large pinch of gallows humour, as he aims to represent human feelings, the world and himself as honestly as he can. This series of linocuts, started in 2020, draws on both personal experiences and the writings of TS Eliot, Czesław Miłosz, RS Thomas and John Donne to explore the shared hardships of humanity’s predicament, drawing inspiration from the fields of morality, politics, history and faith.
