  • Amartey Golding C H A I N M A I L Project. Never one to shy away from 'difficult' subjects and always coming from a personal place C H A I N M A I L features a 15 minute film which challenges stereotypical perceptions of black masculinity and sexuality and has at it's centre a dance performance by Amartey's brother Solomon Golding who is a member of the Royal Ballet.

Chainmail was used to protect, but as well as a kind of armour, it signified wealth and standing. The chainmail that Amartey has handmade for the film has it's own kind of beauty and weighs in at over 60kg. We are displaying these pieces alongside the film as well as an exhibition of photographs which draw on historical visual references of medieval painting and ethnographic images of tribal culture. Amartey grew up in North London amongst young black men some of whom were sucked into the 'epidemic' of knife crime that has become a sad familiarity in news feeds. His anecdotal experience and that of his brothers and friends have informed this project and these themes are further explored in an additional short documentary filmed interview with Amartey and Solomon Golding.
