LONDON ART FAIR 19th – 23rd January 2005
As part of the Whitechapel’s ongoing series of Crash Courses which offer an indispensable guide to navigating the contemporary art scene, the Whitechapel is running a programme at the fair called On The Couch: Collecting Confidence. Visitors to the fair will be able to have one-to-one conversations with curators, gallerists and collectors about how to acquire the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions when buying contemporary art. The expert advice will focus on where to go, who to talk to and what to read when approaching collecting contemporary art, as well as giving insider’s tips and trade secrets. Whether it’s becoming more familiar with gallery exhibitions, subscribing to art magazines or getting to know artists through studio open days, these informal conversations aim to give visitors another approach to engaging with contemporary art. The programme will also deal with concerns such as how to balance your instinctive reaction to work versus its potential investment potential. Alongside On The Couch: Collecting Confidence, the Whitechapel will showcase its special limited editions, which are a great, affordable way to build a contemporary art collection. Specially produced by internationally renowned artists such as Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Liam Gillick and Paul Noble to support the Gallery’s programmes, Whitechapel Editions start from as little as £75. Forthcoming Whitechapel Editions include works by Douglas Gordon, Alex Katz, Anish Kapoor and Luc Tuymans. The full range of Whitechapel Editions will be available for the sale in the Art Projects area of the fair. LONDON ART FAIR Now in its seventeenth year, the London Art Fair continues to develop its role as an unrivalled platform for Modern British and Contemporary art by creating additional new features at the fair and continuing to support arts-related charities.
