Katrine Levin Galleries introduces exceptional contemporary artists from places less explored, currently focusing on China's Yunnan Province and on Georgia. The concept of Katrine Levin Galleries started when Katrine's step-father, who was raised in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, suggested she visit artists’ studios there. He opened her eyes and many doors. She was stunned by the calibre of art, depth of knowledge, and experimentation in Kunming. On returning to London, the concept of introducing exceptional artists from places less explored, both in and outside of China, was born. For the 2019 edition of Art Projects, Katrine Levin Galleries and Shtager Gallery present ‘Disarming’. This is a joint exhibition by two Russian-born gallerists each of whom represents an artist – one from Russia and one from China – whose country has gone through a recent and fundamental change, spurring an examination of cross-cultural influences. The project of building a communist society lasted for 60-80 years, shaped the vision and psychology of several generations in both countries, created a new world, new philosophical contexts, a new model for the transition of mankind into a non-capitalist era. In the figurative total installation by Alexander Shishkin-Hokusai (Shtager Gallery) Sasha Shishkin-Hokusai (pseudonym) is inspired by his namesake, the famous 19th century realist landscape painter Shishkin, with his Russian forests and landscapes, and the Japanese eccentric Hokusai, receiving some strength from Hokusai, i.e., certain elements in his manner, his type of thinking, his love for theatralisation, his work with figures. In his paintings and woodblock prints, Chen Li (Katrine Levin Galleries) melds traditional Chinese inkpainting and calligraphy with the colours and textures of Western oil painting, redefining both genres and focusing on the emotional connection to the landscape. Juxtaposed, Shishkin’s animated figures and Chen’s dynamic yet serene landscapes explore East, West, and the role of the figure in the landscape from a fresh perspective.
