Sam Jackson makes urgent portrait paintings that depict illusive subjects strewn with graffiti. In his editions and work on paper he appropriates imagery that reveals more directly his core interests: punk, excess, glory and pain. Adorning his subjects with graffiti that might be read as tattoos, Jackson externalises the interior and merges the identities of artist and subject.
