Cartographer artist Adam Dant has been commissioned by Barts Heritage to produce a special commemorative map celebrating the 900th anniversary of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Inspired by the rich history of Barts, Dant’s commission brings to life all manner of hospital tales in 900 illustrated stories from 1123 to the present day.  The unveiling of Dant’s commission marks the start of a major regeneration building development project supported by Barts Heritage and the map aims to help navigate the space during this unique period in time.

Join TAG Fine Arts in conversation with Adam Dant and Will Palin (CEO of Barts Heritage), to hear more about the commission and the hospital’s major renovation plans for 2023. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy the launch of Dant’s exclusive limited editioned print sold in support of Barts Heritage.

Adam Dant (b. 1967 – ) is a British artist and cartographer, working in London. Born in Cambridge, Dant studied at the Royal College of Art, London and the MS University Faculty of Fine Arts Baroda, India. On his return to the UK from his appointment as Rome Scholar in Etching and Engraving, the artist created ‘ Donald Parsnips’ Daily Journal’, a pamphleteering art project, which he drew, photocopied, and handed out to passers-by in London or wherever he travelled between 1995-99. Donald Parsnip also appeared as a weekly column in the Independent on Sunday. He later created ‘The Anecdotal Plan of Tate Britain’ for Tate Magazine in 2001 and won the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2002.

Adam soon became a house-hold name known for his dense, elaborate narrative typographic drawings – cartographic surveys of the past, present and future rendered in compelling detail. His artworks chronicling city life, where historical motifs and mythology mingle with present-day observations, create wryly humorous and subversive views on contemporary life. He combines master draftsmanship and meticulous research with a wonderfully imaginative artistic vision which has led him to be hailed as “our very own modern-day Hogarth” by the FT and by The Art Newspaper as “London’s draughtsman laureate”. He is also proud to have been honoured as a “Regent of The College of Pataphysics”.

Recent projects include his 2015 appointment as Parliament’s Official Artist of the 2015 General Election, and solo exhibitions such as ‘The Budge Row Bibliotheque’ at Bloomberg SPACE gallery and “The Return of London” at St Martin in the Fields Crypt. Adam has undertaken commissions as the official artist of The Queen’s Jubilee Thames pageant, Christie’s 250th anniversary celebrations and as the house artist of grade 1 listed Tudor manor house Upton Cressett Hall. His award-winning book of ‘Maps of London and Beyond’ has recently been followed by “Adam Dant’s Political Maps” published to critical acclaim by Batsford Books in summer 2022. His artworks are held in major international collections including: Tate, Arts Council, England, Deutsche Bank, King Charles III, MoMA, New York, The Government Art Collection, UK, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon. He is artist in residence for The Critic Magazine and The Mayfarer magazine, and is represented by the art gallery and publisher, TAG Fine Arts, London.
