CREATING DURING CRISIS

MATTHEW BURROWS MBE, PAUL CARTER ROBINSON FRSA, ZAVIER ELLIS

If you missed the live talk you can catch up on the conversation below.

Artists have always been resourceful and resilient during times of crisis. Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele’s creative bursts before their untimely deaths from the Spanish flu pandemic echoes our current times. Official War artists such as Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland created some of their most poignant work observing war at home and abroad. While Picasso defiantly stayed in Paris for the duration of WWII.

In this talk, moderated by Paul Carter Robinson FRSA Editor of Artlyst, we welcomed panellists; Matthew Burrows MBE Artist and founder of the Artist Support Pledge and Artist/Gallerist Zavier Ellis of Charlie Smith London.

PANELLISTS:

MATTHEW BURROWS MBE: Matthew Burrows MBE (born 1971) is a contemporary British painter and founder of Artist Support Pledge, a global movement in support of artists and makers. Matthew lives and works in the UK and is represented by Vigo Gallery London. Burrows speaks of painting as a form of subsistence, dependent on and arising from the ground at his feet. Through the layering of colour and line, Burrows creates images that invite mediation and a slow unravelling of space and experience.

PAUL CARTER ROBINSON FRSA: Paul Carter Robinson FRSA is a senior art industry professional. He is currently CEO and Editor In Chief of Artlyst the UK’s leading online art information website. He is widely published and has lectured extensively in the area of art and technology.

ZAVIER ELLIS: Zavier Ellis is the director of Shoreditch galley CHARLIE SMITH LONDON; independent curator; and practicing artist. During the first lockdown in 2020 Ellis launched PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA on Artsy, an ongoing, curated exhibition of works on paper, inspired by a physical exhibition at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON in 2010. New work is continuously added and priced at just £250 including P&P in order to support artists during challenging times.
