DOROTHY HEPWORTH AND PATRICIA PREECE: AN UNTOLD STORY

CHARLESTON, LEWES

Next in the programme at Charleston’s new space in Lewes is an exhibition highlighting the extraordinary story of Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece, a pair whose artistic collaboration and romantic partnership remained a secret for decades. Explore their life through a series of paintings and drawings as the duo are recognised as collaborators and co-conspirators for the first time.

Showcasing over six decades of contemporary sculpture, the Hayward Gallery’s critically acclaimed ‘When Forms Come Alive’ spotlights the ways in which artists portray experiences of movement, flux and organic growth.

MALTABIENNALE.ART

Contemporary art and centuries of heritage collide in the heart of the Mediterranean at Malta’s inaugural biennale. maltabiennale.art is brought to you by Heritage Malta’s MUŻA, the National Museum of Art with the full cooperation and participation of a number of other organisations.

Under the theme “white sea olive groves,” maltabiennale.art welcomes a line-up of over 70 international and local artists, including luminaries such as Cecilia Vicuña, Ibrahim Mahama, Pedro Reyes, Republic of Suez Canal, and Tania Bruguera, and homegrown talents Austin Camilleri, Raphael Vella, Aaron Bezzina, and Anna Calleja. Each is bringing a unique vision, where paintings, sculpture, video, installations, and more challenge global perspectives on art and society within the Mediterranean at some of Malta and Gozo’s most storied heritage sites.

 

Embark on a journey through the majestic halls of the Grand Master’s Palace, the treasures of the National Museum of Archaeology, the battle-worn walls of Fort St Angelo, the ancient marvels of the Ġgantija megalithic temples, and more. At each historic location you’ll discover artworks that are as thought-provoking as they are emotionally resonant.

 

Beyond the contemporary artworks, maltabiennale.art presents a diverse programme featuring over 100 curated events, performances, concerts, and workshops, offering an immersive celebration of art and culture, which will run until May 31, 2024.

ENTANGLED PASTS, 1768 – NOW

If you haven’t made it to the RA to visit Entangled Pasts yet, it’s the last month to visit and you don’t want to miss this powerful exhibition which has been described as ‘The most radical show in the RA’s history’. Open until 28 April, experience works by J.M.W. Turner alongside Ellen Gallagher, Joshua Reynolds to Yinka Shonibare and John Singleton Copley to Hew Locke as the past and present collide.

The gallery is delighted announce the opening of their new gallery in Hampshire with an inaugural ‘Winter’ exhibition.

Jenna Burlingham Gallery has expanded with a move to a much larger building, Rope House, on the same street as their original space in Kingsclere. This was once a 19th-century rope merchant’s home and workshop and now has the feeling of an informal townhouse. With open galleries at ground level and drawing rooms upstairs, paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics are displayed throughout as part of interior settings.

Sumi, or Japanese ink, has been used for Oriental calligraphic works and paintings for a long time. The need for works in Sumi, an art form backed by a long unbroken history, remains strong.

In contemporary art, which is filled with an indiscriminate mix of materials and representation techniques, works produced based on Sumi are specifically referred to as “Sumi_ism” and at #7 exhibition a collection of works from Reiko Tsunashima and Sogen Chiba, Mizuho Koyama are displayed from this field.

Kerlin Gallery are delighted to present ‘Stuck on dawn,’ Marcel Vidal’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

A VERY SPECIAL PLACE: IKON IN THE 1990s

A review of Ikon’s artistic programme in the 1990s, presenting work by 40 artists who showed during this period. With Elizabeth Macgregor as Director, Ikon’s outlook was increasingly international, whilst also showing an eclectic mix of British artists including Basil Beattie, Permindar Kaur, Keith Piper, Yinka Shonibare, Georgina Starr and Mark Wallinger.
