MAKING MODERNISM

LONDON, UNTIL 12 FEBRUARY 2023

Making Modernism is the UK’s first major exhibition devoted to pioneering women artists working in Germany in the early 20th century: Paula Modersohn-Becker, Kӓthe Kollwitz, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin. The exhibition sheds light on the ground-breaking work of these individuals who reframed subjects such as self-portraiture, still-life, the female body, depictions of childhood, landscapes and urban scenes.

Combining impressive, bold and intimately-scaled works, this exhibition explores themes of identity, representation and belonging – all powerfully relevant today.

Simon Casson is the artist who paints like an angel, but lets the devil in to visibly disrupt his good work.’ – Andrew Lambirth
