ON THIS FIELD OF GREEN

WAHAB SAHEED

LONDON, UNTIL 19 NOVEMBER

Visit Unit London in Mayfair to experience Wahab Saheed’s first London solo exhibition until 19 November. On This Field of Green explores the artist’s Nigerian nationality and identity through portraiture, focusing on the significance of the colour green of the Nigerian flag as a constant that sets the tone for his work.

‘With his exhibition, Saheed considers the phenomenon of japa. In the Yoruba language, japa is a slang term that means “to flee” and it summarises the trend among young Nigerians who choose to migrate to Europe or North America. The artist himself has had to say goodbye to many friends who have left the country with little notice. Saheed’s exhibition, however, focuses on the beauties of his home environment, examining what might encourage a person to stay in Nigeria.’

This group show displays the work of three artists who now live in different countries to those in which they were born – Charlotte Evans, a British-born artist living in Toronto; Ben Crawford, an Irish-born artist who has lived in Queensland for eleven years; and Veronica Smirnoff, a Russian-born artist who moved to the UK when she was a teenager.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

LONDON, 9 - 25 NOVEMBER

The aptly titled Pushing Boundaries solo exhibition by Leigh Davis sees an evolution of the relationship between painting and sculpture in the artist’s work.

‘Whatever medium I’m working in, the idea of composition, colour and surface texture remains the same. […] So I might remember running my hand over a piece of coarse, gritty, grainy stone in the Isles of Scilly; those elements stay in my mind to the extent that when I’m working on the surface texture, I’ll mix sawdust into the paint. But then I might also scrape, scar and scratch into the layers too – you get this real vibration and tension in the application.’
