LAS HONDAS GUATEMALTECAS

THE MALLESON COLLECTION

LONDON, 14 JULY - 30 SEPTEMBER

If you’re passing through Fitzrovia, make a stop at Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery. The Gallery is presenting the collection of Dr. Andrew Malleson, who has been collecting Guatemalan slingshots (or ‘las hondas Guatemaltecas’) since 1970 when he visited the country to bring medical supplies to remote villages. Dr. Malleson now holds over a thousand of these magnificent pieces – the largest collection in the world.

These fascinating objects are intricately carved from wood, bone or horn, with the primary purpose of killing small prey at close range. Often painted or stained and adorned with glass eyes and beads, the slingshots are considered works of art in their own right. To learn more about the rich iconography and remarkable cultural history behind these enchanting pieces, click the link below.

For a rare glimpse at this spectacular collection, visit the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery until 20th August.

A collection of Sara’s pieces, both early and new, are on show in the gallery together with new prints by Emma Stibbon RA among others.

MENTAL HYGIENE

KATE GIBB

LONDON, 20 JULY - 21 AUGUST

Stop by Jealous North in Crouch End, where Jealous presents screenprinter and artist Kate Gibb‘s exceptional solo exhibition, ‘Mental Hygiene’, until 21 August. The showcase is a manifestation of a summer paradise, using saturated colours and bold forms to depict the intense summer sun and palm trees in the L.A. night air. These idyllic scenes are explored by Gibb using her signature experimental printing techniques. In the words of the artist herself;

“The artworks on show are created from prints of a print of a print – a process led transaction… Akin to a giant rubber stamp, the wide mesh of a textile screen deposits a thick layer of ink that on the first colour took a good while to dry. From then on it absorbed each layer applied disparately, with outcome varying depending on the previous colours and layers. These inherent disparities are everything I love about the process and what makes silkscreen to me, an endlessly fascinating technique.”
