THE IMMORTAL

CAROLINE ACHAINTRE, LORENA ANCONA, TONICO LEMOS, AUAD, DAN COOPEY, MARTA JAKOBOVITS, ANTONIO PICHILLÁ

LONDON, UNTIL 14 SEPTEMBER

There’s just two weeks left to discover ‘The Immortal’ exhibition at Elizabeth Xi Bauer in Greenwich, London. Inspired by recent tragedies such as the Ukraine War and the Covid-19 pandemic, the exhibition features six artists from across the world whose work explores the research and practice of vernacular knowledge, as well as heritage craft disciplines such as ceramics, basketry, weaving and embroidery.

The title of the exhibition references the opening tale in Jorge Luis Borges The Aleph, first published in Spanish in 1949. With twists and turns that are characteristic of the Argentinian author’s style, ‘The Immortal’ tells the story of a man who unwillingly gains immortality, and his subsequent, centuries-long quest to lose it.

‘Whereas immortality of the flesh must be a burden – a frivolous pursuit – this exhibition is a praise to the immortality of that which matters.’

COLOUR POWER 22

LONDON, UNTIL 17 SEPTEMBER

Stop by JGM Gallery in Battersea until the 17th September for a glimpse of the brilliant ‘Colour Power 22’ exhibition, which explores the aesthetic which evolved from the introduction of acrylic paint into Aboriginal Australian communities in the 1960s. This period marked a climactic turning point for Aboriginal Art, which had previously been defined by traditional earthy tones and natural ochres. The exhibition is a vibrant explosion of colour which brings this pivotal moment of Aboriginal Art to life.

“For the first time, Aboriginal artists discovered the blaze of colours available in acrylics which helped them portray the burst of floral blooms that appeared after the seasonal rains in their ancestral lands in the desert region.”

SOGEN CHIBA, REIKO TSUNASHIMA AND MIZUHO KOYAMA

Sumi, or Japanese ink, has been used for Oriental calligraphic works and paintings for a long time. The need for works in Sumi, an art form backed by a long unbroken history, remains strong.

In contemporary art, which is filled with an indiscriminate mix of materials and representation techniques, works produced based on Sumi are specifically referred to as “Sumi_ism” and at #7 exhibition a collection of works from Reiko Tsunashima and Sogen Chiba, Mizuho Koyama are displayed from this field.
